While you may see the benefits of serving as a trustee, you don’t necessarily have the right temperament or mindset to handle this demanding and stressful job. The office of trustee is one that requires an impartial attitude without regard to your own benefit. In fact, you may be required to act against your own interests from time to time. To do otherwise could cause damage to those the trust is intended to benefit, and you could be held liable for falling short. For these reasons, it would be best for all concerned for you to decline the job, or to step down if you are currently serving.
